How many luxs do i need for football filed lighting

First of all, let’s take a look at the lighting illuminance of outdoor football stadiums. According to the different application,there is like below:

Football field light pole height

The height of the light poles of the football field is determined by many factors,such as: application,size and lighting requirement, such as 5-a-side soccer pitch, 7-a-side soccer pitch and standard 11-a-side soccer pitch, professional TV broadcast application and hobby competition training  application.

5-a-side soccer pitch light pole height

The size of 5-a-side soccer pitch is 38-42 meters long and 18-22 meters wide. it is equivalent to a standard basketball court. Although there is no standard regulation on the height of the light poles for for these.

As we all know, the higher the height of the pole, the larger the lighting area and the more weaker the light. Therefore, If installing high-pole light poles in a small area,it will not only waste material but also don not obtain the enough lighting. Here so-called high pole light pole refers to a light pole with a height of ≥ 10 meters, so we can know that the height of  light pole in 5-a-side soccer pitch should not more than 10 meters,and the height range is 7-10 meters available.

According to our many years experience of outdoor football field lighting, it is better to choose then light pole with a height of 8 meter,which can ensure the stadium LED floodlights to go uniform illumination distribution and prevent from dizziness.

7-a-side soccer pitch light pole height

The size of 7-a-side soccer pitch is 65-68 meters long and a 45-48 meters wide. As the area increasing, the height of the light pole is about 12-15 meters according to the different type and power of light fixture used. Why?

If the installing light poles on both sides of the stadium, the effective illumination distance of the light installed on a single light pole is not less than 45 meters . In actual applications, it is more reasonable that the ratio of the height of the light pole to the irradiation distance is 1:3. Therefore, the height of the light pole of the 7-a-side soccer pitch is about 12-15 meters

11-a-side soccer pitch light pole height

The size of outdoor 11-a-side soccer pitch is 100-110 meters long and 64-75 meters wide. There are two different height of light poles depend on both sides or four corners layout,like below:

Outdoor football field light poles layout

There are tree main installing light poles layout,including: on both sides of the football field, on the four corners of the football field symmetrically and mixed layout.

On both sides :The light fixtures are placed on both sides of the football field in continuous light strips or clusters;

On the four corners:The light fixture are placed on the four corners of the football field in a centralized way;

Mixed layout:The combination of light on both sides and on the four corners.

When there is no TV broadcast, it is better to place light poles and light on both sides or the four corners of the football filed and follow below requirements:

When using light poles on both sides layout, the light fixture should not be placed within 10° of the center point along the bottom line. The distance between the light poles and the sideline of the football field should be more than 4 meters. The installation height of light pole should meet that the angle between the light reached the center line and the plane of the football field more than 25°.

When using the four-corner light pole layout, the angle between the light pole point to the midpoint of the sideline more than 5°, the angle between the light pole point to the midpoint of the bottom line more than 10°,the installation height of light pole should meet that the angle between the light reached the center line and the plane of the football field more than 25°.

When using mixed layout, the light fixture should not be placed within 10° of the center point along the bottom line and within 20° of two ends of the goal line

The aiming angle of the light is not more than 70° for above three type of layout.

Note:The shaded part is suitable for installing light pole.

Outdoor 5-a-side football field light deign

There are two aspects be considered when choosing lighting fixtures for the 5-a-side football stadium.

1. The type of light fixtures
2. The number and power of light fixtures.

5-a-side football field is commonly used for training and hobby competition.From above guide, we know the lux of 5-a-side is range from 200l to 500lx,and the height of the light pole is about 8 meters.

5-a-side football stadium LED light

We can choose 12 piece of special LED flood light for football field (SMD or COB),and 6 piece of cone-shaped light pole with a height of 8-meter, and each light pole comes with 2 piece of 200W floodlights, a total of 12 LED light. The  illuminance  is about 200lux for this configuration. We can further increase the illuminance by increasing the number or power of the light fixture.

5-a-side football stadium metal halide light

We also can choose traditional floodlight metal halide light instead of the LED.In addition to the power is increased by 400W-100W,other is the same, and the illuminance is about 400-500lx.

7-a-side soccer pitch light pole layout

Assuming that the total length of the football field is 75 meters and the height of the light poles is 15 meters, then the distance between the two light pole is about 30 meters (the ratio of the height of the light poles to the distance between the light poles is 1:2). So,we can place 3 piece of light poles  on each side of the stadium.

Among them,one light pole is on the center line of the stadium, and other light pole each at a distance of 30 meters from the center line. (8 piece of light pole required for a height of 12 meter).

Standard 11-a-side football field light design

Blow is standard 11-a-side football field light pole lighting  solution for hobby training application.

Compared with the 5-a-side and 7-a-side stadiums, the lighting design of the outdoor 11-a-side football field is more higher, including main three aspects:

1. The height, size and material of the lighting pole
2. The type and the power of light fixture
3. The number and installation location of the pole light

Height of light pole

For hobby training application, it is better to choose the light pole with a height of 15 meters.Why?The 11-a-side football field is 64-75 meters wide,hence the half irradiation distance is not less than 37.5 meters. According to the ratio of the height of the light pole to the projection distance is 1:3,a light pole with a height of 15 meters will be good for the projection distance at 45 meters.Due to the installation position of the light pole is a little far from the sideline of the stadium, so it is is better to choose the light pole with a height of 15 meter for the 11-a-side football field.

Material of light pole

It is better to choose a conical pole light pole with an upper diameter of 120mm, a lower diameter of 280mm, and a wall thickness of 4.5mm. The light pole should adopt the overall hot-dip galvanizing processing for anti-corrosion. 

The size of light fixture

For the type and power of lighting fixtures,you can use a light pole with 3 or 4 piece of 1000W metal halide light. Although metal halide light is not good in energy consumption, they have advantages in lighting brightness, irradiation distance, penetration, and angle of light. Of course,If you can also choose the high-quality LED lights  according to the actual situation.

How many watts of LED light for outdoor football lighting

There are LED floodlights and spotlights for outdoor football lighting.The watts of LED lights is determined by many factors,such as type of light fixture,the size of football field,the height of light pole and the Illuminance etc,below is the distance of football LED lights:

The watts of 5-a-side football field LED lighting

According to the size of 5-a-side football field, that is, the  area is about 1050 square meters. According to experience, the half of the best irradiation distance is the effective irradiation distance. Therefore,We should choose about 200 watts LED lights,an the number is:

1050/80≈12(take an even number)

One light pole comes with two lights,So,the number of light pole is 6 piece.

The watts of 7-a-side football field LED lighting

According to the size of 7-a-side football field,similarly,we should choose about 400-600 watts LED lights, and the number of light fixture is 20-24 piece.

Of course, above is estimated values under ideal conditions.

We can increase the watts according to the actual area and situation.

The watts of 11-a-side football field LED lighting

Compared with the f5-a-side or 7-a-side football field, the 11-a-side football field is more higher than them. There are common two type of four corners and two sides to install lights in an eleven-a-side football stadium. If it is four corners, it will need higher the illumination distance of the lights. In general,we can choose 600-800 watts of high-power LED lights, the number of light is 40-48. If lights are placed on both sides ,we can appropriately reduce the number.
